Chalk carving souvenir - 72nd Battalion CEF Other Ranks' badge, carved by Cpl Rico Christie (Rick) Cao, MM # 130223 from the trenches of Vimy Ridge. It had been shattered but it was restored by Roy Waterman, Conservator of the Vancouver Museum circa 1974 - 1976 at request of Museum Curator, Colin Stevens.
Corporal (later Lance Sergeant) R.C. (Rick) Cao arrived in France with the original contingent of the battalion on 13 August, 1916. He was sick for five months between 23 July, 1917 until 28 December 1917. He was wounded in action on 22 July, 1918 and rejoined the battalion 2 days before the Armistice. He was awarded the Military Medal for his actions at La Coulotte-Avion in June/July 1917. CEF Service File attached.
His older brother was Pte 129430 Christie Cao who had previously served 2 years in the Canadian Militia and in the 72nd Battalion, CEF. CEF Service File attached.
