Captured Japanese Flag (Burma), 1945

Japanese Flag captured at Mandalay, Burma in July, 1945. A note in the file states: "JAP FLAG CAPTURED AT MANDALAY, JULY/45 HAULED DOWN BY LT. (MAJ) HANK VARNEY ACTING COY COMD. ATT. 7 GURKHA RIFLES 1943 - 1950. Off citadel civiv gov't manshin Knocked down gate. Bldg deserted. Japs in sewage system burned out. by gas drum 1973.23" This note is written on the back of a Seaforth Officer's Mess chit. The accession Book states that it was donated by Major DUVARNEY but the note says "VARNEY". Many people fled the city during World War II when the city was under Japanese occupation from May 1942 to March 1945. The city suffered heavy damage. The palace citadel, turned into a supply depot by the Japanese, was burnt to the ground by Allied bombing; only the royal mint and the watch tower survived. NOTE: THERE IS A JAPANESE (RISING SUN) FLAG IN THE COLECTION BUT IT IS NOT CERTAIN IF IT IS THIS FLAG. CIRCA 2010 - 2011 A JAPANESE FLAG WAS MAILED TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN RANGERS MUSEUM IN KAMLOOPS BUT IT MAY HAVE NEVER GOT THERE OR EVEN POSTED AT ALL.
