Third School of Musketry, 1916

Third School of Musketry, 1916. The Canadian School of Musketry authorized 1903 1998.122.056 - 3rd School of Musketry, Victoria, April-May, 1916, NPF sticker #Seaforth Highlanders of Canada 000120. From the attached article on the history of Beacon Hill, Victoria: - In 1967, a handwritten note by Park Administrator W. H. Warren described military target practice at Clover Point: "During World War I, troops stationed at the ‘Willows” Fairground marched to Clover Point to practice shooting from the ranges to the butts on the point. H.Q. building was located just east of Linden Ave. and the whole area was fenced and topped with barbed wire. This did not last long and there were various openings made in the fence for residents to get to the beach." (Park Office files, April 28, 1967). Warren did not mention the 800 military personnel camped in Beacon Hill Park in 1916-1917. They lived in wooden barracks and tents in the north end of the Park. Those soldiers undoubtedly marched to the Clover Point Rifle Range for target practice as well.
