Water Bottle (canteen) harness for Oliver Pattern equipment, 1916
Water Bottle (canteen) harness for Oliver Pattern equipment, 1916.
PERSONAL EQUIPMENT (SET) 1916 PATTERN, CANADIAN
After the failure of the 1899 and 1915 equipment, Canada tried again with the 1916 equipment.
This personal equipment system was designed and manufactured in Canada for use by its own military forces and the third variant of what was known as the Oliver equipment. Like the British 1908 pattern web equipment, the Canadian 'Dismounted Pattern 1916' could be worn with the valise as Full Marching Order, and removed to form Fighting Order, however it suffered from a serious drawback in that there was no provision for wearing the haversack on the back. The 1916 pattern was introduced early in that year to all Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) units in Canada but with so much unfavourable criticism associated with the field practicalities of leather components and the design, the Canadian pattern was withdrawn and men arriving in England were issued with 1908 pattern webbing. This Canadian equipment was relegated to use for training and only saw active service via a number reinforcement battalions in Europe.
