Stretcher bearer armband ("SB")

Khaki Stretcher bearer armband ("SB") with red cross. Believed to be from WW I. Attached is an electronic book entitled "Letters of a Stretcher Bearers". First World War British (Canadian) Army issue stretcher bearer's armband. Personal associations not known. Originally, the job of stretcher bearers in infantry units on active operations was performed by battalion bandsmen (especially within regular battalions). As the war progressed and with the increase of ' Service' battalions, the role devolved on those with a modicum of basic first aid knowledge and the physical strength required for the arduous job of transporting wounded over difficult ground to safety and professional medical help.
