Chalice from Passchendaele, 1917
Metal chalice (cup / goblet) found in the mud of the battlefield at Passchendaele by 72nd Battalion, CEF Private A.P. (Andy) McNair, 1917. One of two cups.
In 2013, there was some controversy about these goblets. People in Belgium want them to be returned. No further details at this time. See Rob MacDonald and Jim Purdy. It was later determined that these goblets are not religious in nature and will not be returned.
1015674 Pte Archibald Peter McNair originally enlisted in the 231st Battalion on 10 July 1916. He arrived in France and joined the 72nd Battalion, CEF on 23 May 1917. He was later transferred to the 12th C. L. T. M. B. (Canadian Light Trench Mortar Battery) on 22 December 1917. The London, England born McNair had previously served for 5 years in the Essex Cadet Corps. CEF service file attached.
