WW I Map Case (Capt. Newson)
Map Case - WW I, "Capt. NEWSON C. L. H. [Canadian Light Horse]" Maker marked "THE ALLIES REGd. GFR LONDON" Instruction sheet from maker inside. The case was made by G.F. Rapkin of 17-20 West Smithfield, Holborn Viaduct, London, EC. Possibly purchased by Colin Stevens.
Officers private purchase map case bought from military outfitters with double internal clear sleeves, leather straping with brass fittings. There was no official issue map case, so many Officers would have bought their own like this one which packs up small, is soft and can be hung across your shoulder.
English born Captain Henry Montgomery Newson was an officer in the Canadian Light Horse. Before enlisting in the CEF in 1917, he was an inspector in the RNWMP. At the end of the war he contracted influenza and was demobilized. He remained in England after the war.
