German shrapnel fragment
Shrapnel, which left a dent in the Brodie helmet, and resided for a time in Private Lord's neck.
129630 Arthur Lord arrived in France with the original 72nd Battalion contingent on 13 August 1916. He was wounded by a gunshot wound to the right ear and a fractured clavicle on 21 October 1016. From his service file (attached), he did four months in France before he was transferred to England due to his wounds. He remained there until the end of the war and he was discharged as a sergeant in the Canadian Army Medical Corps.
He was one of the first men of the 72nd Battalion CEF to be wounded in WW I. He was wounded on 31 October 1916 in the Regina Trench system on the Somme during a German bombardment. He arrived in France on 14 August, 1916. This was a "Blighty" wound for him and he was evacuated to England. The regimental history does not make any mention as to whether he returned to the battalion or not.
[NOTE: He did not return to the 72nd Battalion in the field.]
