Small Kit bag, World War I

Small Kit bag, World War I. Marked in black "M & D" (Militia and Defence) 1914 and on the other side "J. J. TURNER & SONS MANUFACTURERS PETERBOROUGH ONT." Inked on by owner "171957" and "B. A. EMERY VICTORIA BC". This bag may have belonged to 171957 James Tyson who had enlisted in the 83rd (Queen's Own Rifles) Battalion, CEF. There does not appear to be a "B. A. EMERY VICTORIA BC" in the LAC database. CEF service file attached J.J. Turner & Sons re-located to George Street, Peterborough from Port Hope, Ontario in 1887 and went on to become what could have been the largest manufacturer of sails, tents and awnings in Canada. The company had various workshops, including a blacksmith shop and carpentry shop which were located on site.
