Italian M35 SCM Grenade - INERT
Italian M35 Grenade - INERT, SCM, marked Societa Romana. These grenades are commonly identified by the manufacturer's company logo stamped on the grenade. The SRCM is embossed with "SOCIETA ROMANA". The SRCM design was the most refined of the Mod.35 grenade series.
The most significant feature is a fail-safe mechanism which would render the grenade inoperable in the event of a misfire, something the BREDA and OTO lacked.
While at a glance it seems to be simple, the internal mechanism is complex, involving many small parts. It is a rather cumbersome item to assemble and was no doubt an expensive grenade to produce.
Production of the SRCM continued after the end of the war and was still being encountered in Europe as of 1992. It has an interesting internal safety feature that set it apart from the OTO and Breda designs.
The Italians had 3 styles of hand grenades they used regularly during WWII, all of which were given the designation Mod.35. Bright red in colour and a bit unreliable, the British in North Africa (1941-1942) would find these things in an unexploded condition and eventually nicknamed them "Red Devils". The first of this series of three was the OTO. The second, and a bit more reliable, was the BREDA.
