NORTHWEST EUROPE , MARCH 1945-OCT 1945

EUROPE DU NORD-OUEST, MARS 1945-OCTOBRE 1945

Sketch of Barneveld, Holland by Captain Bob Swinton dated 23 April, 1945.

Pen Sketch of Barneveld, Holland by Captain Bob Swinton dated 23 April, 1945. Barneveld is a town and a municipality in the province of Gelderland in the centre of the Netherlands. From the Regimental History, pages 433 - 434: "Meanwhile the 1st Canadian Corps, having sealed off the Twenty-fifth Army, was ordered to patrol towards but not penetrate the Grebbe Line. As it turned out the Corps' thrust from the Ijssel to Barneveld was its last offensive operation. The end of major operations for the 1st Corps did not mean the end of the fighting on the Corps' front, although the scale of contact with the enemy was reduced to patrol activity. For the Seaforths, acquaintance with the hide-and-seek patrol activity on this front came on 21 April when the battalion moved to take up billets in a number of farm houses about two miles south of Barneveld. In the flat farmlands to the west lay the Grebbe Line, and between this line and the forward battalions was a no-man's-land which the Canadians were determined to dominate by active patrols."
