Royal Guard for HRH Princess Margaret at Vancouver Airport, 16 July 1958
"The Royal Guard" for HRH Princess Margaret, 16 July 1958 at Vancouver Airport. NOTE: The two attached photos may or may not be the correct ones. At one time it hung in the hall near the washrooms.
From Roy's Book (page 462): "Many of the Young Soldiers made up the 100-man Royal Guard for Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret when she visited Vancouver in July, 1958. Under R.S.M. Tankard's direction their drill was brought up to such a high standard that many onlookers thought the Guard, smartly turned out in their new green tunics, was composed of veterans.
Mr. Tankard, formerly with the Brigade of Guards and recently retired as the R.S.M. at Sandhurst, served 28 years with the British Army before joining the Seaforths in 1952. He replaced Mr. George MacMahon as Regimental Sergeant-Major in September, 1957. By the mid-1950's there was a large proportion of former British Army officers serving in the
regiment, a reflection of the large immigration into Canada from the United Kingdom during the post-war years. They gave a unique flavour to the mess, and their service experience was of great value to the unit.
