TRAINING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, 1939 - 1943
FORMATION AU ROYAUME-UNI, 1939-1943
D Company, SHC at South Nutfield, England
"Don [D] Company, South Nutfield, England". Noted in photo: Major G. Gibson O.C. Lieutenant-Colonel C.C. Ferrie.
From the Regimental History, pages 116 - 117:
"... [T] he Seaforth Highlanders were informed they would be moving into the South Nutfield - Godstone area to take over the role of guarding the Redhill airfield. The new location was
only about a dozen miles west of Limpsfield and placed the unit much closer to the towns of Reigate and Redhill. Nevertheless, the Seaforths were still very much "in the country", and the new quarters were definitely not as comfortable as those they had left. There were some Nissen huts, a few farm houses, but most of the battalion was under canvas, scattered over several miles. Moreover, August was a wet month, and the country roads leading into company areas soon became extremely muddy even though limited to unit vehicle traffic. Tons of cinders and rubble from the bombed areas of London were trucked in and dumped on these roads and footpaths, but the effect was modest. If the late Summer and Fall of 1941 had not
been so wet the new area might have been more bearable, but the three months the Seaforths were stationed there were uncomfortable and boring."
Nutfield is a village and civil parish in the Tandridge district of Surrey. It lies in the Weald immediately south of the Greensand Ridge and has a railway station at South Nutfield which is one stop from Redhill, on the Redhill to Tonbridge Line.
