TRAINING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, 1939 - 1943

FORMATION AU ROYAUME-UNI, 1939-1943

Unidentified Soldier wearing a Wedge cap

Unidentified Soldier wearing a Wedge cap in a head and shoulders shot. On rear: "Sgt Boyd" which has been crossed out. In the Canadian Forces, the field service cap is defined by the CF Dress Instructions as a "cloth folding or 'wedge cap' ... Originally designed for wear during field operations and training, it may now also be worn as an undress cap with full and undress uniforms." The field service cap was originally adopted army-wide in 1939, and replaced in 1943 by a khaki beret (or balmoral). The coloured field service cap was a variant permitted for private purchase and worn only when off duty. These were in the colours of the regiment or corps of the wearer.
