Cdn WW I clasp knife

The Clasp knife is marked: "M & D CANADA 1915" on one side. The handle is marked with M & D, 1915. The "C->" stamped on the other, indicating it was issued to Canadian forces during WW I. M&D stands for Militia and Defense existed between 1860 - 1923. The knife is the same basic specification made by Thomas Turner & Co but with metal scales. This is a British, Sheffield made, marlin spike knife. The main blade has the maker's name, most of which is worn off and hard to read, though it looks like "Thomas Turner & Co. Sheffield." The knife has a main blade, a marlin spike blade, and then a little short spearpointed blade, for 3 blades in all. The knife has a single blade with can opener and marlin spike for working with rope. A side note, many consider the marlin spike to be the sign of a sailor's knife but the Army used rope as well and the spike is very handy for working with tight knots. Canadian issue knives are hard to find. Canada used this pattern knife until the post WW II era but the the Birmingham maker stopped manufacturing it post WW I and the pattern, with a different style blade, was taken over by Metal Stampings, Ltd. in Newfoundland and by Case in the US. Some of the Case made knives were purchased by the US and also saw service with the US Navy.
