Lapel pin "For Service at the Front"
Lapel pin - "For Service at the Front" serial number 319316. NOT for Sam Rife as his certificate above shows a different serial number. Rife's badge number was 182245. Most likely for Lt. C.G. McLean or one of the WILSON men in 1990.014
The pin was used to identify war veterans so that they could claim benefits set aside for them at home. Physical description: A round brass badge; in the centre is an enamelled shield of the Union Jack flag; on the front above shield, is inscribed "FOR SERVICE AT THE FRONT" around the outside, Embossed (on front, above shield) is "CEF"; Embossed (on back) is "PENALTY FOR MISUSE 500 DOLLARS OR SIX MONTHS IMPRISONMENT"; Stamped (on back) is the serial number (of the badge and not the soldier). Army Class A: A bronze button 14/16 inches (22 mm) in diameter.
Final CEF Award Criteria
1. Members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) who served at the front and had retired or relinquished their commissions, been honourably discharged, or returned to or retained in Canada on duty.
2. Members of the Imperial Forces, subject to the same conditions as members of the CEF, provided they were Canadian residents on the 4th day of August, 1914, and had returned to reside in Canada.
