Kilt Apron - Scouts & Snipers, 72nd Bn, 1915-16

Kilt Apron - Scouts and Snipers, 72nd Battalion, CEF, 1915-16, Bramshott, England. In blue ink, the kilt apron has drawings and names of the men in the unit. It has the flags of the Union Jack of the United Kingdom and the Red Ensign of Canada as well as the insignia of the scouts (fleur de lys) and the snipers - a "S" over laurel leaves and crossed rifles. It lists the names of the scouts and snipers of the Battalion. It has the title "72nd Batt. / Seaforth Highlanders of Canada / Scouts A. Coy. B. Coy. / Snipers C. Coy. D. Coy. / Mobilized Sept. 10th 1915 at Vancouver B.C." Lieut. W. Ross and Lieut. Manley are the officers listed. All together there are 59 soldiers listed on the apron. Kilt Aprons (covers) were worn by Highland regiments on active service. Not only did the apron protect the kilt but it also made the kilt less conspicuous in the field. It is a brown canvas apron with tape tie in a seam at the top, a single button flap pocket in the centre (acting as a sporran). From the names and markings on the apron, it appears that each company had their own snipers. A and B Companies were under the command of Lt Ross. Lt William Cameron Ross arrived in France on 13 August 1916 with the 72nd Battalion. He was wounded on 1 November 1916, returned on 6 September, 1917 and was wounded again on 30 October 1917. C and D Companies were led by Lt. John Fitzpayne Manley who was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917. A & B Companies (Scouts) Lt.W. Ross, LCpl A.F. Adams, Pte W.E. Biddlecombe, S.W.
