Painting of Padre Durnford, WW II
Oil Painting of Honourary Major Reverend Roy Durnford, DSO, Chaplain of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada during WW II. The artist's name is illegible.
Major the Rev. R. C. H. Durnford, DSO, CD Canadian Chaplain Service served in the Seaforths from 1942 to 25 September, 1945. He later served in the Korean War.
Excerpt from Rev. Durnford's Distinguished Service Order citation:
"On Dec. 15, 1944, two companies of Seaforth Highlanders moved up to enlarge a bridgehead in northern Italy. At about 5 p. m., as casualty reports reached the regimental aid post (RAP), Padre Durnford went forward with the ambulances. When German shellfire halted the ambulances, he led the stretcher-bearers forward on foot. Covering 500 yards under continuous fire from machine guns, mortars and an 88-mm gun, he arrived at D company's position at 7 p. m. and organized removal of the wounded.
Later, under intermittent machine gun and mortar fire, Padre Durnford went on foot across country to A company. He used prisoners as stretcher-bearers and led the party back to a crossroads. There he ordered a shuttle with the only remaining ambulance, standing in the open and disregarding occasional mortar fire. After eight hours under heavy enemy fire, he reached the RAP at 2:30 a. m. with the last of the wounded."
