HIGHLAND DRESS AND INSIGNIA

ROBES ET INSIGNES DES HIGHLANDS

'Germany Platoon' Kilt Apron (s), 1978

Kilt apron (s), canvas with Seaforth 1778-1978 badge. This was drawn for the 'Germany Platoon' that attended OP REFORGER of 1978 but was never signed. THERE MAY BE TWO "GERMANY PLATOON, 1978" KILT APRONS. THE SECOND ONE HAS PLACE NAMES IN GERMANY (BADEN) AND SCOTLAND (ELGIN). SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS ARE THERE ARE TWO DIFFERNT APRONS. The platoon took part in the annual NATO Reforger exercises in Germany as well as parading in Scotland to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Seaforth Highlanders (then the Queen's Own Highlanders). Captain Rob MacDonald was a member of this platoon. Kilt Aprons (covers) were worn by Highland regiments on active service. Not only did the apron protect the kilt but it also made the kilt less conspicous in the field. It is a brown canvas apron with tape tie in a seam at the top, a single button flap pocket in the centre (actng as a sporran).
