ALLIED REGIMENTS OF THE BRITISH ARMY
RÉGIMENTS ALLIÉS DE L'ARMÉE BRITANNIQUE
78th Highlanders, 1840
78th Highlanders, 1840
The 78th Highlanders in Great Britain 1838-1841
The 78th left Ceylon in 1837 and arrived in Ireland in February 1838. Among its more unusual acquisitions was a young elephant, presented to the regiment in Ceylon, which was trained to march in front of the Regimental Band. (It was subsequently presented to the Edinburgh
Zoo when the 78th left for India in 1842).
In 1838 there had been serious disturbances in Canada, and extra regiments had to be sent out to reinforce the garrison and to support the Canadian Militia regiments. The 78th was ordered to send volunteers, and the regiment was thus reduced to well below strength.
In 1839 it moved back to Scotland in order to recruit, and was stationed first in Glasgow and then in Edinburgh. By 1840 it was up to strength again. Also in 1839 the 78th received new Colours, the fourth stand to be carried by the regiment.
In 1840 there were serious industrial riots in Lancashire, and the 78th was sent to Manchester for over a year on peace-keeping duties. It returned to Ireland in November 1841.
