Fondation du 72e régiment, 1910-1914
Private R.H. Wyatt taken after the first parade in Vancouver in June 1911
Private Robert Henry Carter (R.H.) Wyatt taken after the first parade in Vancouver on 22 June, 1911.
From the Regimental History (page 6 and 7 ):
"The first public appearance of the regiment took place on Coronation Day, Thursday, June 22nd, 1911, the ceremonies in connection with the occasion being held in Recreation Park, Vancouver. With a hot sun beating down on the largest crowd of civilians and soldiers ever gathered in Vancouver, [estimated to be in the neighbourhood of 30,000 people] the Coronation was fittingly celebrated. The weather, which had been threatening in the morning, could not have been better when the ceremonies began in t'he afternoon, and a crowd of about 30,000 people covered every foot of space in the park, and filled the grand stand to overflowing. the display of troops was something previously unknown in Vancouver, and the new Highland regiment especially drew forth favourable comments".
1015285 Sgt Wyatt enlisted in the 231st Battalion but later served in the 72nd Battalion, CEF arriving in France on 23 May 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his actions at Amiens "L. C." operation in August, 1918.
