SEAFORTHS IN WORLD WAR II

SEAFORTHS PENDANT LA DEUXIÈME GUERRE MONDIALE

Letter of recommendation - K15920 Private Vernon Harris for work on H.T. "Ile de France" 1 October 1945

Letter of recommendation - K15920 Private Vernon Harris for work on H.T. "Ile de France" 1 October 1945. He who served in the Seaforths from 14 February, 1945 to 25.September, 1945. He was wounded on 24 February, 1945 on the Senio River Front with a dozen others. The SS Ile de France was a French ocean liner built in Saint-Nazaire, France for Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. The ship was the first major ocean liner built after the conclusion of World War I, and was the first liner ever to be decorated entirely with designs associated with the Art Deco style. It was neither the largest ship nor the fastest ship, but was considered the most beautifully decorated ship built by CGT (also known as the "French Line") until the Normandie. In autumn 1945, the Ile de France was returned to the CGT after five years of military service with the British Admiralty. At first the Ile de France was used to ferry American and Canadian troops home. It was refitted in 1947.
