ALLIED REGIMENTS OF THE BRITISH ARMY

RÉGIMENTS ALLIÉS DE L'ARMÉE BRITANNIQUE

The Seaforth Highlanders, The Colours

Seaforth Highlanders, The Colours. Painted by Harry Payne. Tuck # 9885 This card possibly shows the 2nd Seaforths while they were stationed in Fort George, Edinburgh or Shorncliffe before WW I. The 2nd Battalion was presented these Colours in 1899 by HM Queen Victoria at Balmoral Castle. The 1st Seaforths were in India. Nevertheless, the Assaye Colour (from the 78th Highlanders - 2nd Battalion) is not shown in this postcard. Harry Payne (1858–1927) was an English military artist. With his brother, Arthur C. Payne, he produced many series of oilette postcards for Raphael Tuck & Sons and also did extensive work for Gale and Polden producing illustrations for their postcard series along with other military artists including Edgar Alfred Holloway, John McNeill, and Ernest Ibbetson. Raphael Tuck & Sons was a business started by Raphael Tuck and his wife in Bishopsgate in London on October 1866, selling pictures and greeting cards, and eventually selling postcards, the latter being the most successful. Their business was one of the most well known in the 'postcard boom' of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
