Blue Patrol Tunic of the BC Hussars
Blue Patrol Tunic of a trooper of the BC Hussars with chain mail epaulets and brass buttons for the British Columbia Horse / 31st BC Hussars.
The British Columbia Dragoons trace their origins to the formation of the Canadian Mounted Rifles, two independent squadrons of horse in Kamloops and Vernon in 1908. In 1910 two additional squadrons were raised and the regiment was renamed the British Columbia Horse. In 1912 the unit was renamed as the 30th Regiment, British Columbia Horse. 1914 saw the formation of the Victoria Independent Squadron on Vancouver Island.
In 1920 it was renamed the British Columbia Mounted Rifles until 1929 when it was again renamed as the British Columbia Dragoons.
In World War I drafts of these units formed the 2nd and 11th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Note that Mounted Rifles unlike cavalry who fought on horseback only used horses as transport and fought as infantry on the ground.
In 1939 the BC Hussars were converted to an artillery regiment as designated as the 1st Searchlight Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery.
