Seaforth Highlanders of Canada on their way to meet General Bernard Law (Monty) Montgomery, Militello, Sicily 20 August 1943. The Battalion is being led by Lt Col Bert Hoffmeister. Official photo 23123. On 20 August 1943 General Montgomery came to inspect the [2nd Canadian Infantry] brigade. After a hot climb up the 1000-foot hill to the Edmontons' area where the brigade was assembled, "Monty," carrying a horsetail fly switch instead of a swagger stick, had all ranks gather round his car. He exuded confidence, paid many compliments to the Canadians and welcomed them warmly to his command [the 8th Army].
