Cap Badge - The Cheshire Regiment

Cap Badge - The Cheshire Regiment (Possibly from the Edwardian period (1902-1910) The badge of this regiment includes an eight-pointed star around a band inscribed with the unit title. Within the latter there is an acorn between oak-leaves. At Dettingen in 1743 it won the distinction of wearing the oak leaf whilst parading for Royalty and also on certain Regimental days. The story is that the 22nd protected the king, who was commanding the field, from being taken prisoner by the French. The king picked a sprig of oak from a nearby tree and presented it to them. The Cheshire Regiment was an infantry regiment of the British Army, part of the Prince of Wales' Division. The 22nd Foot was raised by the Duke of Norfolk in 1689 and was able to boast an independent existence of over 300 years. The regiment was expanded in 1881 as part of the Childers reforms by the linking of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot and the militia and rifle volunteers of Cheshire. The title 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment continued to be used within the regiment. On September 1, 2007, the Cheshire Regiment was merged with other regiments to form part of the Mercian Regiment, becoming 1st Battalion of the Mercian Regiment.
