Cap Badge - New Zealand "Onward" General Service
Cap Badge - The New Zealand "Onward" General Service Cap Badge mislabelled as "New Zealand Infantry".
This badge was sold by Jim Purdy for $20.00 on e-Bay in the Spring/Summer of 2017. This badge was deemed irrelevant to the museum. The money was used to purchase relevant badges for the collection.
The badge takes the form of a laurel wreath surmounted by a King's crown. In the centre are the voided letters 'NZ'. Beneath the wreath is a ribbon scroll with the motto 'ONWARD'.
The New Zealand "Onward" General Service Cap Badge. This badge has it's origins dating back to the First World War - when the British Section of the N.Z.E.F. (1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force - circa 1914) had a badge designed for New Zealand Nationals who were residing in Great Britain and enlisted from there and wanted to serve in a NZ Regiment. The badge has had many variations produced, however all are unmistakingly 'New Zealand' and like the Australian 'Rising Sun', this badge forms strong representation of this nation.
It later became recognised and accepted as the 'universal' badge and was worn by the NZ Contingent in the Empire Parade, 9th November 1915 in London.
At the outbreak of WW II, New Zealand was still using its individual Regiment badges, and it was not until late 1939 that the universal 2nd NZEF "Onward" badge was introduced for all ranks and used until 1947.
Second General Service Badge (not in collection)
In WW I New Zealand initially mounted an Expeditionary Force (1st NZEF) of 17 Infantry Regiments, 12 Mounted Rifle Regiments, Artillery, Medical, Corps and Specialist units etc. The force was further reinforced with 43 drafts during the war, all of which had their own hat and collar insignia. This force was known as the 34ths. The insignia for the 34th Reinforcements (circa early 1917), was adopted throughout the 1st NZ Expeditionary Force, as it gave a sense of identity to all the soldiers. This insignia became known as the 1st NZEF badge and used the motto "Expeditionary Force" for the scroll under the insignia instead of "Onward".
