Cap Badge - 16th Waikotoi Regiment, New Zealand

Cap Badge - 16th Waikotoi Regiment, New Zealand This badge was sold by Jim Purdy for $25.00 on e-Bay in the Spring/Summer of 2017. This badge was deemed irrelevant to the museum. The money was used to purchase relevant badges for the collection. The 16th (Waikato) Regiment was formed in 1911 as a Volunteer infantry regiment in the Auckland Military District. The Regiment's collar badges show a Maori warrior’s raised arm grasping a taiaha (customary weapon) , symbolising the bravery of Maori warriors. The Regiment's motto ‘Ka whawhai tonu ake ake’ ‘We will fight against you for ever’ – is the famous battle cry of Rewi Maniapoto, who fought British forces in the Waikato in 1864. The 16th (Waikato) Regiment became a part of the Auckland Regiment. It saw action at Gallipoli, France and Egypt. It supplied Companies to the 18th, 21st, 24th & 29th Battalions of 2 NZEF. Became part of 1st Armoured Regiment in 1950.
