231st BATTALION CEF (2nd RESERVE BATTALION)
231e BATAILLON CEF (2e BATAILLON DE RÉSERVE)
Machine Gun Section of the 231st Bn, CEF on a Route March
Machine Gun Section of the 231st Battalion, CEF on a Route March. The Officer leading is on horseback.
Attached from the 231st Souvenir Album, page 18:
"The Machine Gun Section was organized last September while the Battalion was in camp at Sidney. Since then, they have been working systematically under the direction of Lieut. H. McN. [Horace McNaughton] Fraser who has been ably assisted by Sergts. Campbell, Milne and Richardson. The Section has made good progress in their work as far as training facilities here will allow.
Each man had several practices with the guns on the Brentwood Ranges last summer where very good results were obtained, and if the Section progresses in England as they have since their organization three months ago, they should go to the front a thoroughly efficient machine gun section."
Lt Horace McNaughton Fraser arrived in France on 24 July 1917 from the 231st battalion, CEF. He became sick on 8 September 1917 and returned to the battalion on 2 September 1918. CEF service file attached.
