72nd BATTALION CEF, SH of C

72e BATAILLON CEF, SH de C

72nd Bn at Minoru Park 1916 (outside the Quarters)

"Minoru Park 1916 (outside the Quarters)" - 72nd Battalion, CEF. The photo shows four soldiers lighting a fire outside the stables. Photographer's number 575 Minoru Park was originally home to a horse racing track and an airfield. It was named Minoru after a race horse owned by King Edward VII in 1909 it was named "Minoru Park" in honour of the Derby winner. The track was later renamed Brighouse Park and closed in 1941. Minoru Park being the scene of many aviation firsts. An airstrip had operated at Minoru since 1909, on a grassy field adjacent to the racetrack which saw the western Canada’s first powered flight in 1910 and first passenger flight in 1912. What is now the Ricmond Rod and Gun Club (7891 Cambie Rd, Richmond) was once the church hall for the Richmond United Church. The church complex eventually consisted of the Church, stables, manse, and church hall. The original church has been relocated to Minoru Park. The Rod and Gun Club assumed the lease in 1970 and continue to reside there. The track closed permanently in 1948 due to deteriorating facilities and competition from Hastings Park in Vancouver which ironically, the 72nd Battalion also trained in WW I.
