72nd BATTALION CEF, SH of C

72e BATAILLON CEF, SH de C

72nd Bn in the Dominion march past in London on 3 May, 1919.

The 72nd Battalion Contingent led by Lt Col Guy Hamilton Kirkpatrick on horseback in the march past of Dominion Troops in London on 3 May, 1919. This photo is from the Regimental History, page 188. CONFIRM The Battalion was only told about the parade in the early hours of 1 May when they arrived at Le Havre, France from Ohain, Belgium. They were to supply 10 officers, 150 men and the Pipe Band. They boarded the ships quickly to get to Southampton, Bramshott Camp and then London for the huge parade of Dominion troops on 3 May, 1919. (See pages 185 - 186 of Seaforth History). Argus [Newspaper], Monday 5 May 1919: DOMINIONS MARCH Royal Spectators The march of dominion troops through London on Saturday took place in glorious weather. The whole route was thronged with cheering crowds. Canada led, then came the Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, and Newfoundlanders as named. The King stood on a dais with the Queen and the Prince of Wales and Prince Alexander of Connaught. The saluting base was in front of Buckingham Palace where His Majesty, King George V took the salute. On the ground in front of the dais were the Minister for War (Mr Winston Churchill) and a group of army commanders, including Sir Douglas Haig, Sir Herbert Plumer, and Sir William Birdwood. Opposite to the dais were several hundreds of wounded dominion soldiers seated. Fourteen aeroplanes manoeuvred over the procession, but no dare-devil tricks were attempted.
