72nd BATTALION CEF, SH of C

72e BATAILLON CEF, SH de C

Inspection of the 4th Cdn Div by King George V at Aldershot, 1916

"Inspection of the 4th Canadian Division by his Majesty the King [George V]. Dominion Day, 1916" . The 72nd Bn CEF is marching past. The photo was taken at Hankley Common, Aldershot as the photographer was Gale & Polden, Ltd. The Seaforth 72nd Battalion CEF was in the 4th Division. There is a Seaforth crest at top of mount. Same as photo 1998.142.046 From the Regimental History (page 19 - 20): "On the occasion of His Majesty the King's visit to in July, 1916, the Battalion was distinguished by being selected to furnish a guard of honour of three officers and 100 other ranks. Early in June the 72nd Battalion had been notified that the G. O. C. 4th Canadian Division, had selected the 72nd Battalion for that honour on account of its smartness and general efficiency. With regard to this occasion a member of the Battalion who was at Aldershot attending a school of instruction at the time, overheard many highly commendatory remarks as to the physique and military smartness of this guard of honour, from some of the most able critics- the seasoned men of the Imperial forces."
