72nd Battalion Tug of War Team
"72nd Battalion Tug of War Team" in action. Official Caption: "72nd Bn. men in the Tug of War finals. (Canadian Championship Athletic Meet in France, 1917.) [29] September, 1917" DND Photo o.2011. On rear: " These sturdy built Canadians were beaten in the Tug-of-War Final."
"Pull!" An officer [sic RSM] urges on soldiers of the 72nd Battalion, The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada in the tug of war finals at the Canadian [Corps] Championship Athletic Meet at Villiers-au-Bois France on 29 September 1917.
From the Regimental History, pages 74 - 75:
"On September 29th, when the Corps Championship Sports were held at Villers-au-Bois,
the 72nd Battalion tug of war team met that of the 29th [Vancouver] Battalion, which it had previously defeated for the Army Championship. The pull was a very long one, and at one
time the 29th team except one man had been pulled over the line. They were, however, in splendid physical shape, and managed to recover themselves and eventually win.
The 72nd team was well known throughout the Corps, and was universally considered unbeatable, consequently this defeat occasioned great surprise, and was generally attributed
to lack of training and over confidence."
