ITALY, SEPT 1943 - MARCH 1945

ITALIE, SEPTEMBRE 1943 - MARS 1945

Grave side service for the fallen lead by Padre Durnford, Ortona, 1944

Grave side service lead by Padre Durnford, Ortona, 1943-44. He is reading from then Bible in front of a stand of drums draped in a Union Jack flag. The soldiers are in seven ranks and reading / singing from a program. There are three young Italian boys in the background. With the photo is a note written by David Strachan from a conversation with Colonel David Fairweather in 2012. Fairweather told him that this photo is of the men killed at Ortona. Fairweather was there at this service. He said that it "did not feel real". The battle ended on 28 December and this service was in mid January 1944. Padre Durnford stayed in Army after the War but not in the Seaforths.
