Cove Barracks - P/CQMS . G.W (George) Clapshew, # K52294 driving a Norton (16 horsepower) motorcycle and Norminton / Normination (?) in England.
War Department Number on Motorcycle is possibly "C4102898"
K52295 P/CQMS George W. CLAPSHEW served in the wartime Seaforths from 14 September 1939 to 5 March 1940 when he was repatriated back to Canada due to illness and age.
The Norton Motorcycle Company (formerly Norton Motors, Ltd.) is a British motorcycle marque, originally from Birmingham, UK, founded in 1898 as a manufacturer of "fittings and parts for the two-wheel trade". By 1902, they had begun manufacturing motorcycles with bought-in engines. In 1908, a Norton-built engine was added to the range. This began a long series of production of single and eventually twin-cylinder motorcycles, and a long history of racing involvement. Wartime WW II production of the military Model 16 H and Big 4 sidevalve motorcycles was Norton's contribution to the war effort, almost 100,000 being manufactured.
The Norton 16H is a designation given to British motorcycles made between 1911 through to 1954 with various modifications and refers to a single cylinder Norton 490cc side valve engine with a bore and stroke of 79 x 100 mm. The H denotes the Home model as distinct from the Colonial export model. Norton was the main military motorcycle supplier prior to WW2 and one of the main suppliers of motorcycles to the British Army in World War II with a total of nearly 100,000 produced. British Army Nortons were also supplied to the Commonwealth forces such as Australian, New Zealand, India and the Canadian Army.
P/CQMS Clapshew only remained in the Regiment until May 1940. [He may have been sent back to Canada due to his age. He had originally joined the British Army in 1908.]
