ROBES ET INSIGNES DES HIGHLANDS

Badge of Capt Wilf Gildersleeve, MC

Lieutenant (later Captain) W.F.J. (Wilf) Gildersleeve, MC's Officer's Seaforth silver badge. It was placed on the Colonel Cecil Merritt, VC display before 2008. It may be the same badge as in 2001.018.001. He joined the Seaforths as the Signals Officer on 22 October, 1943 and stayed in the Regiment until 6 June, 1945. He was wounded in Italy on 24 October, 1944. He was awarded the Military Cross. Lt. Gildersleeve had become so attached to the battalion that he had wrangled a transfer from the Signals Corps to the Seaforths as a platoon officer. He played the organ during the Christmas celebrations at Ortona.
