Sgt Alec Aitken and the 231st Battalion, CEF football team, 1916/1917. One soldier is in a kilt and the rest of them are in shorts. From the 231st Bn CEF Souvenir Album, page 38: Considering the short length of time which has elapsed since its organization, the football team of the 231st Battalion has a remarkably good record. It was organized in 1916 when the regiment was in its infancy, but very little showing was made. The Military League was entered, comprising the 72nd, 121st, 131st, 158th and 231st and in the schedule the 231st team succeeded in defeating only one team, the 131st. The committee in charge of the team was composed of Coy. Q.M. Sergt Higgs, Sergt Milne, Pte. Forgie (Captain), Pte. Doull (Vice-Captain). and Sergt. Gleeson of the Yukon Infantry Company (at that time attached to the 231st Battalion). When the Battalion went into camp at Sidney the football team got down to hard work and in a very short time were able to hold their own with all comers. During their stay they played four games with the team of the Bantams, taking each contest with good margins, winning two cups - the first with two straight wins and the latter with one game. The fourth was a friendly match. On returning to Hastings Park the team was entered in the Vancouver District League. and played through the series, winning nine games out of ten. This season the team has only been defeated once out at something like eighteen contests. Their record in the League fixtures entitles them to the championship.
