ROBES ET INSIGNES DES HIGHLANDS
Blue piper's tunic
Blue piper's tunic.
Estate of Private Robb, died in hospital March 1917, 46th Canadian Infantry Battalion. CEF service file and CWGC attached. The 46th Battalion had its own Pipe Band and he may have served in it. There is a "David Ross [sic Robb] from Perthshire, Scotland who died of pneumonia in February [sic March], 1917. The band wore the Royal Stewart tartan. He originally enlisted in Calgary with the 50th Battalion. (Nominal Roll attached.)
The 50th Battalion (Calgary), CEF was authorized on 7 November 1914 and embarked for Britain on 27 October 1915. The battalion disembarked in France on 11 August 1916, where it fought as part of the 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division in France and Flanders until the end of the war.
The 46th Canadian Infantry Battalion (South Saskatchewan) was established on 1 February 1915, with its headquarters in the Moose Jaw Armoury. Their strength on leaving Canada was 36 officers and 1115 other ranks. While training in England, parts of the battalion were broken off and farmed out to other units. In return, the 46th received personnel from other battalions such as the 65th Battalion (Saskatoon). The 46th Battalion served with the 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division from 11 August 1916 until the Armistice. The unit has come to be known as "The Suicide Battalion". The 46th Battalion lost 1,433 killed and 3,484 wounded - a casualty rate of 91.5 percent - and won 16 battle honours in 27 months.
There appears to be three relevant Private Robbs.
One is David Robb, #435039 of the 46th Bn and
The other is Arthur Robb, #29618, 72nd Bn who was KIA on 28 June 1917.
(Possibly 16th Bn - Arthur Charles Robb, #28991 joined in 1914.
