Henderson Bagpipes - Pipe Major Edmund Esson

Peter Henderson Bagpipes - belonging to Pipe Major Edmund Esson. The pipes are made of African Blackwood, and have ivory projecting mounts; the ferrules and and drone caps are silver and have thistle motifs engraved on them. A miniature version of the Seaforth capbadge (stag head, ducal coronet, cipher and motto: Cuidich 'N Righ) has been mounted in silver on the blowpipe stock. Beneath the stag is a silver plaque which reads: "Presented to - Pipe Major Edmund Esson - Piper of the Canadian Contingent - At the Coronation of - His Majesty King George VI - By - Honourable Ian A. MacKenzie - Minister of National Defense - London, May 12, 1937." These pipes were acquired by Honorary Colonel Michael Shields in 2008 from former Seaforth Piper Hugh Norman Aird, who was given the pipes to play by Ann Esson, Pipe Major Esson's widow, in 1982. Honorary Colonel Shields, who was also the museum director, issued Esson's pipes to then Pipe Sergeant Vern Kennedy, on April 5th, 2008. Kennedy became Pipe Major in 2013 and retired in May 2018, playing Esson's pipes for the entirety of his tenure. In 2018, Esson's pipes underwent a restoration by Lee and Sons Bagpipes. The stocks were re-bored, the drone tops were refitted, and the runing boxes were reamed and trued. After the 2018 restoration, Esson's pipes were issued to Pipe Sergeant Brittany Crooks.
