Tan Binocular case (WW I)
Tan coloured leather Binocular case. There is an old label stuck onto the leather case reads "WW I field glasses (Lt J.J. Carney, MM)". This Binoculars (Field Glasses) case belonged to 687632 Sergeant (later lieutenant) John James Carney who arrived in France to the 72nd Battalion on 11 May 1917,
Sgt Carney was recommended for the Military Medal (MM) during the Battle of Amiens (August 8 to13, 1918), during the "Llandovery Castle Operation" - (L. C." operation) as a sergeant in B Company. He eventually received it on 12 May, 1919. He was commissioned from the ranks on 22 August, 1918.
Lt Carney originally enlisted in the 172nd (Rocky Mountain Rangers) Battalion, CEF based in Kamloops, British Columbia. The unit began recruiting during the winter of 1915/16 in Kamloops and district. After sailing to England in October 1916, the battalion was absorbed into the 24th Reserve Battalion on 1 January, 1917 and soon disbanded. Lt Carney then transferred to the 72nd Battalion.
