TRAINING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, 1939 - 1943

FORMATION AU ROYAUME-UNI, 1939-1943

Sgt F.H. Whiting holding two swastikas cut off tail of Focke-Wulf 190, 1942

Seaforth soldier Sergeant (later Lieutenant.) Frank Harlow Whiting holding two swastikas cut off the tail of a Focke-Wulf 190 (FW-190) aircraft that was shot down by Pte. Emerson G. "Soapy" Johnstone (not Smith) using a Bren Gun on a factory roof-top while on anti-aircraft duty at Eastbourne, England. The fighter was shot down on 26 August 1942 (a week after the Dieppe Raid) . The photo was possibly taken September 1942. From the regimental history, page 130-131: " ... training was going on "as per syllabus" on the 26th when two German Focke Wolfe 190's came skimming across the Channel at about 0900 hours. They were spotted by Pte. E. G. Johnstone who manned an anti-aircraft post on top of a factory. As they flew low over Eastbourne and close to his position, he emptied several magazines into the planes and could see them hitting home." ... "Meanwhile the downed plane was the object of souvenir hunters, and the swastikas on each wing soon became the prized possessions of the Seaforths." Lt. Frank H. Whiting served in the Seaforths from 27 November 1939 until he was killed in action at the Hitler Line, Italy on 23 May 1944. See page 302 of the Regimental History. K52173 Private E. G. "Soapy" Johnstone remained with the Seaforths for almost the whole war, being transferred from the Regiment on 5 March 1945.
