Lt Gen Burns inspects Seaforths at the Tiber River near Perugia, Italy, 1944
Lieutenant-General E.L.M. Burns, GOC 1st Canadian Corps inspects Seaforths at the Tiber River near Perugia, Italy with Lt Col. S.W. Thomson, DSO, MC, 15 - 16 August 1944. DND photo.
From the Regimental History (page 325):
"Although nothing of this was known to the Seaforths at the time there were signs that something was in the wind. During the 15th and 16th of August the companies were exercised on an assault river crossing of the Tiber, and during the same period the Corps Commander,
Lt-Gen. E.L.M. Bums and the Army Commander, Lt-Gen. Sir Oliver Leese, both paid a visit to the Seaforths. The Commanding Officer, Lt-Col. Sid Thomson, it was noted, was making numerous visits to and from Brigade Headquarters, and when on 16 August word got round that the unit was to move back to the Adriatic area, there were not too many Seaforths who were surprised."
Perugia is the capital city of the region of Umbria in central Italy, crossed by the River Tiber. The city is also the capital of the province of Perugia. Perugia is located about 164 kilometres north of Rome, and 148 km south-east of Florence. It covers a high hilltop and part of the valleys around the area. The region of Umbria is bordered by Tuscany, Lazio and Marche. During World War II the city suffered only some damage and was liberated by the British 8th army on 20 June 1944.
