Khaki Balmoral, 72nd Bn (Pte McDonald, #525384)
Khaki Balmoral (WW I) 1917 - 1919". The badge is possibly a "sweet heart" pin or a Regimental Association Badge.
There is no tartan backing behind the badge. Stamped on the inside:"228 W /|\ D P". Written in ink on a piece of white tape:"Regulation Head Gear 72nd Seaforth Highlanders worn by Arthur 1917-1919". Wriiten inside the band: "Arthur S. MacDonald"
The Balmoral Bonnet, which is known as the Tam o'Shanter, originated in 1915, as a replacement for the Glengarry, to be worn by Scottish troops in combat. A khaki wool bonnet comprised of a crown with a tan colored wool Touri (pom-pom) to its center, a body with seams to each side and the rear, bow (or string toes) to the rear. The badge went on the left side over a regimental tartan patch.
