Gravestone of William J. Ball, 72nd Battalion, CEF at Mountainview Cemetery
Gravestone of 446513 Pte William John Bell, 72nd Battalion, CEF at Mountainview Cemetery, Vancouver in 1994. He died on 23 October, 1943. On rear: "MV 97".
446513 Pte William John Bell served in the 72nd Battalion and arrived in France with the original contingent on 13 August 1916. Pte Bell was also temporarily attached to the 176th Tunneling Company in 116. He later transferred to the 78th (Winnipeg Grenadiers) Battalion, CEF on 1 May 1917 after the 78th Battalion sustained severe losses at Vimy Ridge. He went to the Canadian Labour Pool (CLP) and then back to the 78th. CEF Service File attached.
The 85th Infantry Battalion joined the 12th Brigade in April 1917, after the 73rd Battalion was broken up after devastating loses at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. The 78th Battalion moved up to take the position of the 73rd and the 85th was brought into the 12th Brigade to fill the void. As such, the 78th Battalion took over the position and patch of the 73rd Battalion and surrendered their patch and position to the newly formed 85th.
The 78th served in France and Flanders with the 12th Infantry Brigade of the 4th Canadian Division from August 15, 1916 until the armistice.
