Gravestone of Pte William O'Keefe, 72nd Bn at Mountain View Cemetery
Gravestone of Pte William O'Keefe, 72nd Battalion CEF at Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver in 1997. He died on 16 November 1940. On rear: "MV 97".
CONFIRM - Not in Regimental History or found in the 236th Battalion newspaper. William Gerard O'Keefe (Okeefe) - regimental # 1030683 is not mentioned in the newspaper (page 25) as going to another unit after the battalion's disbandment. He is on the 236th Battalion Nominal Roll and left Canada for England.
Nevertheless, he was possibly from a draft of 150 soldiers from the 236th (MacLean's Kilties) Battalion, CEF which arrived in March, 1918 while the battalion was in St. Pierre, France. Pte Torry Eastabrooks Purdy also came from the 236th Battalion.
NOTE from the CEFSG: "The 236th Bn was the last CEF battalion to recruit to full strength. All of her officers had previous combat experience with the 1st and 2nd divisions of the CEF, with only a couple of exceptions. Therefore it was hoped that the 236th might succeed in obtaining a place in the 5th Division. But the need to reinforce the various Kilties battalions in the field, and ultimately the break-up of the 5th Division, dashed these hopes.
The 236th Bn arrived 19 Nov 1917 at Liverpool, England with 27 officers and 1029 OR; moved 19 Nov 1917 to Seaford Camp; sent a draft on 7 Feb 1918 to the 72nd Bn, totalling 250 OR; furnished a draft on 5 Mar 1918 to the CRT numbering 65 OR; sent two drafts on 7 Mar 1918 comprising 100 OR each to the 13th Bn and 42nd Bn; the residual strength of 489 all ranks was absorbed 14 Mar 1918 to form D Coy of 20th (Royal Highlanders) Res Bn. Many of those absorbed by the 20th Res Bn also later made their way into drafts for the 13th, 42nd and 72nd Bns.
Prior to absorption by the 20th Res Bn, the 236th Bn also sent a draft of 14 men to the CE, a draft of 5 men to the CMGC, 1 officer to CRT, 1 officer to the CCS, 1 officer to the PPCLI and 4 officers to the RAF.
