Gravestone of LCpl Samuel Orr, 72nd [sic 231st] Bn at Mountain View Cemetery
Gravestone of LCpl Samuel Orr, 72nd Battalion CEF at Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver in 1997. He died on 30 April 1932. On rear: "MV 97". This could be 1015126 (LCpl Samuel Orr). He did not go overseas as he was too old. His papers state that as of 22 February 1919, he had been in the 231st Battalion for 2 years and 2 months since his enlistment on 4 February 1916. He had previously served in the 72nd Regiment for 11 months.
There is no Samuel Orr in the regimental history. On the LAC database there is another Orr who served in the 231st Battalion and later the 72nd Battalion. He is 1015127 (Cpl Thomas Orr). Thomas was most likely a relation of Samuel Orr, possibly a nephew. He was killed in action during the Great War and could not be buried in Vancouver. CEF Attestation and CWGC documents attached.
Another Orr is 130065 (Sgt David Chalmers Orr) who was killed in action during the Great War and could not be buried in Vancouver. CEF Attestation and CWGC documents attached.
