Soviet flag captured by Canadians at Ourosozeros on April 11, 1919 in Russia
Soviet flag captured by Canadians at Ourosozeros on April 11, 1919 in Russia. Lt. Col. Leckie was OIC of Force "Syren" which was the component of the British North Russia Expeditionary Force sent to Murmansk, North Russia. There was also a Force "Elope" which deployed to Archangel.
The North Russia Intervention, also known as the Northern Russian Expedition and the Murman Deployment, was part of the Allied Intervention in Russia after the October Revolution. The intervention brought about the involvement of foreign troops in the Russian Civil War on the side of the White movement. The northern campaign lasted from the final months of World War I in 1918 through to September1919.

No, but how about a SOVIET flag captured in BATTLE by Canadians? - July 1 2003, 1:12 AM
I traded said flag to the Canadian War Museum.
It has the hammer and sickle in yellow as I recall on a red flag. Flag is somewhat pennant shaped and has a clipped point (made that way). NO star by the hammer and sickle which research showed meant one of each 5 points of the star for each of the five continents that the Commies intended to conquer.
So, WHEN and WHERE did Canadian troops fight in combat against SOVIET SOLDIERS, AND to top it off, capture one of their flags?
... "Allied Intervention in Russia, 1919". This flag was captured at Ourosozeros (I'm no longer sure of the spelling) near Murmansk in North West Russia. Flag was brought back along with a bunch of other souvenirs by LtCol Leckie (72nd Seaforth Highlanders of Canada). I found it and the other stuff in the attic of the Seaforth Armoury in the early 1970s. My research showed the star was added a little after 1919 as I recall (research was done in mid-1970s).
I also traded the CWM a Boer flag that was marked "ERMELO AUG 11th 1900" which was where a battle with one of the Boer Commandos took place. One of my soldiers brought it in and donated it. It was a family heirloom.
Also sent a banner from the FINNISH LEGION, a Communist unit fighting alongside Canadians in Northern Russia in 1919. Disbanded as they were Commies fighting against Commies as I recall, therefore suspect loyalties! This MIGHT be only artifact from them. Banner had Finnish writing on one side and Russian on the other. "Workers of the World Unite! The Finnish Legion" (as I recall - I had a Finnish University prof of mine translate the Finnish words. Also a souvenir of LtCol Leckie I believe.
We traded stuff that we wanted for our museum to represent Seaforth history but items which we lacked.
