FOUNDATIONS OF THE 72nd REGIMENT, 1910-1914
Fondation du 72e régiment, 1910-1914
Officer's Sword (Dirk) Belt
Officer's Sword (Dirk) Belt with Brass Buckle circa 1910 (2013.118.002a)
Purchased on eBay by Jim Purdy
A pre-1914 Scottish officers ceremonial full dress belt from the 72nd Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. This is based on the belt buckle and the fact that the belt came with a pre-WWI style tunic with a 1912 version of the stalking cougar collar dogs. The red leather belt
is faced with an embroidered bullion-like fabric.
The leather is supple and free of cracks and or serious ear or damage. The embroidered face is in overall excellent condition though faded and soiled with age. There is also one very small frayed area where the buckle has worn against it over time.
The buckle is in excellent condition and features a four piece regimental crest, which includes the crown, "L" motif, stag head and separate banner emblazoned with the Cuidich'n Righ (Aid the King) motto of the 72nd. The buckle is largely free of any dings and scratches. The size is approximately 34 waist (Canada) with a fair amount of length adjustment still left on the belt. It appears that the leather portion of the belt was shortened by someone at some point in time. They did however not cut the embroidered facing fabric, 4 - 5 inches of which hangs loose behind the belt.
Note the matching full dress ceremonial officers doublet that came with this belt was also for sale.
