Group photo of the 236th (McLean's Kilties, Sir Sam's Own) Battalion, CEF

Group photo of the 236th (MacLean's Kilties, Sir Sam's Own) Battalion, CEF. In the photo is Pte Torry Estabrooks Purdy, # 1031320 who was later transfered to the 72nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, CEF when the 236th was broken up for reinforcements in England. Purdy had originally enlisted with the 236th (MacLean's Kilties) Battalion, CEF as he was from Amherst, Nova Scotia. He arrived in France on 8 March 1918. He was wounded on 30 March, 1918 and again on 11 August, 1918. The artifact was donated to the Museum. Purdy's diary, paybook and membership cards were loaned and then returned to Laura Paolini. It has not been confirmed if the original and the copy made by Rob MacDonald were returned to the donor. The 236th (The New Brunswick Kilties) Battalion, CEF was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Based in Fredericton, New Brunswick and Camp Valcartier, the unit began recruiting in the spring of 1916 throughout Canada and the New England region in the United States. After sailing to England in November 1917, the battalion was absorbed into the 20th Reserve Battalion, CEF in March, 1918. The 236th (The New Brunswick Kilties) Battalion, CEF was also known as the "McLean Kilties of America" or "Sir Sam's Own". It had one Officer Commanding: Lieut-Col. P. A. Guthrie.
