CANADA, 1920 - 1929

CANADA, 1920 - 1929

1st Bn, SHC less the Honour Guard for Lt Col Blair, 25 August, 1929

1st Battalion, The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada less the Honour Guard (who were in scarlets) on the Cambie Grounds, Vancouver. The parade is for Lt. Col. R.M. Blair, Commanding Officer, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, upon winning the King's Prize at Bisley, England for being the top rifleman in the British Empire, 25 August, 1929. These troops are wearing service dress and kilts without rifles. From the Regimental History, page 30: "Lt-Col. R. M. Blair made history at Bisley by being the first man in seventy years to win both the King's Prize and the Grand Aggregate. The regiment, the city, indeed all Canadians were tremendously proud of his accomplishment and on his return in August he was given a huge welcome. Later that day a civic banquet was given in his honour followed by a dance given by the regiment. Special permission was given for the free issue to the Seaforth Officers' Mess of the rifle with which he won the Bisley match, and the new rifle range was named in his honour the following year. It was a glorious welcome home for a greatly admired officer." This photo is from the Scrapbook entitled "Historical Record of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada". It includes photos from 1912 to the 1950s. The author is unknown at this time.
